US Steel Imports Up 15% in 2017

    January 26, the American Iron and Steel Association announced that the total steel imports by the United States in 2017 reached 38,121,000 tons, an increase of 15.4%. Among them, imports of finished products amounted to 29.558 million tons, an increase of 12.2%; imported timber market share of about 27%.

    In 2017, the countries of origin of US steel imports were: 3.753 million tons of South Korea, down 2% over the same period of last year; 2.91 million tons of Turkey, down 9%; Japan's 1.54 million tons, down 16%; and 1.405 million tons of Germany, up 18%.

    Compared with 2016, the production of major steel products in the United States has shown a significant increase in 2017. Among them, the production of oil-only pipe increased by 196%, pipe production increased by 63%, standard pipe production increased by 40%, mechanical pipe production increased by 30%, hot rolled steel production increased by 23%.
